- About Us -
With the use of repurposed Japanese-style houses and all of the food, agriculture, activities, and other local resources that Ukiha has to offer,
we have developed a network of accommodations and are working to create even more activities, products, and other attractions
that will add exceptional value to the area. In doing so, our aim is to promote overnight tourism in Ukiha.

- Farm Stays the Concept -
The goal of the farm stays we offer is to provide every visitor to Ukiha with experiences
that allow them to take a "journey through our way of life."
These unique experiences are delivered through activities that are unique to Ukiha,
making use of local features such as the area's agriculture industry and traditional Japanese-style houses.

Creating a New Style of Farm Stay Accommodations with Traditional Japanese-Style Houses and Activities

The city of Ukiha is endowed with an array of local resources. These include culinary resources such as the local fruit and confections, visual resources such as the Tsuzura rice terrace and the historic white-walled buildings of Yoshii, and experiential resources such as the area's tourist-friendly farms and ceramics workshops. Ukiha offers overnight visitors with a uniquely large number of itinerary options.

Our lineup of local activities and use of traditional and other repurposed houses reflect our ongoing commitment to helping the region overcome the issues it faces in a manner that is socially responsible.

Leveraging Our Region's Natural Splendor, Farms, and Forestry Resources to Provide High Value-Added Food Services

To create food service options for visitors and overnight tourists to enjoy, we are utilizing not only Ukiha's massive output of vegetables and fruit, but also the area's population of deer, wild boars, and other animals that pose a potential threat to agriculture, which collectively are an issue facing areas with large amounts of mountainous terrain.

Attracting Customers, Including Inbound Tourists, With a Location Close to the Fukuoka Metropolitan Area

The city of Ukiha is located roughly one hour by car from the Fukuoka Metropolitan Area. Its exceptionally convenient location is also a short distance from Oita Prefecture municipalities of Beppu and Yufuin, both of which are major sightseeing areas.

We are developing a range of activity and accommodation options that will resonate with inbound tourists who are interested in using the Fukuoka Metropolitan Area as their home base for a sightseeing tour, as well as with tourists from within Japan.

About Ukiha: Agricultural Lands

Ukiha is located in southeastern Fukuoka Prefecture, on the border with Oita Prefecture, in an area blessed with natural beauty. Across the southern part of the city, the Mino Mountains extend like an ancient folding screen from east to west. Orchards stretch out through the foothills of the mountains. In the city's north, the majestic Chikugo River flows. These and other natural features are joined by terrain and geological features the likes of which are rarely seen anywhere else in Japan. Rather, the area around the farmlands of Ukiha closely resembles the famous French wine regions of Bordeaux and Alsace, to the extent that it is referred to as the "Ukiha terroir."

About Ukiha: Traditional Houses and Vacancy

1) There are 1,460 unoccupied houses (occupied houses: 11,080) in the city of Ukiha. The city's vacancy rate of 13.2% is roughly the same as Japan's overall vacancy rate of 13.5%.

Notably, among the city's unoccupied vacant private houses, shared-use houses, and housing units within store or office buildings, over half (437 of 776) are available to be used either without the need for repairs or with only minor repairs required.

2) Ukiha is home to a large number of residences that are considered to be "kominka," or traditional Japanese-style homes. (*1: The Kominka Appraiser's Handbook defines a kominka as a house that is at least 50 years old and has been built using traditional or conventional construction methods.) There is an expectation that if these buildings are to be used, it should be done in a way that elevates their cultural value.

3) November 2017 saw the opening of Kifune Farm Theatre, a restaurant, cafe, and farmhouse bed-and-breakfast where guests can enjoy soba noodles made with 100% buckwheat flour and other dishes featuring local ingredients, all in a restored 150-year-old Japanese-style house. That was followed by the opening of Flatform Ukiha, a shared work space and restaurant in a restored 63-year-old Japanese-style house. The repurposing of Ukiha's traditional Japanese houses continues to gain momentum.
